Background
After the successful finish of Trams the Canon Auto Zoom 814 has proven itself as a reliable Super 8 Camera and could be utilized for a more ambitious project. Ickler brought the Camera with him on his 14 day journey from Washington DC to Massachusetts, only using public transit for the first 10 days of his trip. He chooses to tell the story of the trip with recurring elements like empty hotel beds, public transit vehicles and street signs showing his constant movement and exploration along the route. The film is presented as shot and without editing.
Themes
The film explores the freedom of the solo traveller and the way public transit affects the routes you can travel. It is contrasted with the last third of the film where the car is utilized to venture to less urban areas that are impossible to reach with public transit in the US. As a diary film, it’s a deeply personal story of the artists journey along the oldest cities in the US to reach his travel companion.
Production
The film was shot on Kodak Tri-X Black and White film between the 23rd of October and 6th of November 2023. It was developed and scanned by Andec Cinegrell
