Background
In January 2022 Ickler decided to start exploring the areas around Berlin, starting in adjacent Ahrensfelde. Throughout the year he covered 13 cities around the State of Brandenburg, including its biggest cities Potsdam, Cottbus, Brandenburg an der Havel, Frankfurt (Oder) and some smaller ones such as Eisenhüttenstadt or Fürstenberg. His goal was to capture the scenery, architecture and nature of the State and to find common themes in those categories. The photographs show very little people, with only occasional long range shots as part of the scenery or for scale.
Production Techniques
While the project started just using the Minolta 7000 AF, it evolved together with Ickler’s camera collection, expanding to Medium Format using the Mamiya 645 and Mamiya RB67. With the acquisition of the Canon EOS 30 and the Canon EOS 300X multiple Exposure Photography became possible. The two Canon Cameras also allowed using wide angle and faster prime lenses using the modern Canon EF lens mount. Starting in April Finn Ickler started experimenting with expired films which extended to the Brandenburg Collection. Next to new films such as Kodak Portra or Kodak Tmax he shot heavily expired films including Agfa Agfachrom, Kodak Plus-X or Fuji Fujichrome 400D.
